Dudu Ngwenya, popularly known as Lady Du, is a singer, rapper, dancer and songwriter hailing from Vosloorus. The grand-daughter of Alias – the owner of the first nightclub in Vosloorus’ townships, daughter of DJ Choc and niece of YFM’s DJ Zan-D; music flows through her DNA.

Beginning her journey as a Hip Hop DJ at age 9, she’s always held music close to her heart. “Music was my place of safety,” Lady Du shares. “It was my only escape.” It was after receiving a bursary to study somatology in London that Lady Du would find a worldly escape. Traveling across 108 countries in a year, she took in the sights and sounds that would mold her as both a person and artist. “I gained a lot of ideas from travelling,” she says. “I studied other people and brands like Slum Village, Aaliyah, Will Smith and J Dilla.”

Lady Du has received even more mainstream attention by featuring on the cover of Spotify’s flagship Amapiano playlist ‘Amapiano Grooves’, gracing the streaming platforms ‘African Heat’ billboard in Times Square, New York and appearing on national news broadcaster eNCA. Fittingly, the multi-talented artist’s debut project is titled ‘State of Amapiano Address’and aims to position her as a force behind the genre’s global takeover. “I want to put a stamp on people saying president of Amapiano,” she says. “I’m trying to break the walls of a maledominated industry.”

With her Pantsula attitude and deft fusion of Amapiano and hip-hop flows; this first solo outing represents a crowning moment – after two decades in the industry. ‘State of Amapiano Address’ contains an uplifting aura that brings Lady Du full circle from her first appearance on an Amapiano song: Mr JazziQ’s “Superstar”. “I sang about being a superstar, driving big cars and living my dream. That’s exactly what I received within a year,” she says. ‘Superstar’ was me manifesting my life into existence.” And so… the crown fits.
